About the Author

I’m a retired registered nurse, having worked in the operating room for over twenty-five years. After retiring, I returned to my first love – writing. I enjoy writing short stories in the creative nonfiction and fiction genres and poetry.

In 2004 I underwent two anterior cervical fusion surgeries for herniated discs in my cervical spine, and as a result, suffered from the complication of a paralyzed left vocal cord. A very special gift that I had been blessed with – the ability to sing – was taken from me, and I was certain I would never sing again. Over time, my right vocal cord moved over to meet my left and a miracle occurred. I’m now happy to say that I can sing again, a blessing for which I’m grateful every day. I’m an alto in our church choir and enjoy this social activity with my husband, whom I’ve been in love with since 1974.

I believe in love at first sight because it happened to me. My husband and I have been happily married since 1976 and we have three wonderful grown children of whom we’re very proud. But the real baby of our family is my sweet toy poodle, Lucy. My husband gave her to me when I was going through a difficult period of illness. I believe she helped to heal me, and now she’s my constant companion. She has taught me the true meaning of loyalty and unconditional love.

One of the most exciting and quite amazing things that ever happened to me was when we adopted our son, Joe. After a heartbreaking miscarriage and trying unsuccessfully thereafter to conceive, we adopted our son eight years later. When I asked the adoption agency what his birth date was, to my astonishment they revealed that it was the same date that the baby I had miscarried eight years before was due to be born! My husband and I believe that our son was destined to be ours. Five years later, God blessed us by allowing us to conceive our daughter Sarah, and two years later, our daughter Stephanie was born. I am proud to say that our children have grown into some of the most amazing adults that we know.

I had a near-death experience in 2007 when I suffered an anaphylactic reaction after a cortisone injection to my cervical spine. I’ll never forget how I felt when the nurse ushered me into the office and told me that she would come back for me after the procedure room was prepared. As I sat there, anxiously waiting, a voice whispered to me, “Pray.” Not even thinking twice, I did as the voice instructed and began to pray.  Two hours later, as I lie in the intensive care unit of the hospital, after being rushed to the emergency room via ambulance, I knew in my heart that it must have been my guardian angel watching over me and telling me to pray. Ever since then, I’ve never taken a single day for granted.

I have a passion for history and am somewhat of a history buff. I believe that as Pearl Buck wrote: “If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.” My favorite era is the American Revolutionary War. I try to read everything about this period in time that I can get my hands on, and I also enjoy writing on the subject.

I love classic movies, especially the films with actors such as Cary Grant, Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, and Deborah Kerr. I enjoy movies like “An Affair to Remember” and “Adam’s Rib” in which these actors starred. How does the saying go? They don’t make movies like that anymore. My all-time favorite movie is “The Sound of Music.” My oldest sister brought me to see it for my tenth birthday, and I must have seen it at least a hundred times since, and I’m not joking! I know every line of every actor. My favorite scene is the one where the characters of Maria and Captain von Trapp are in the gazebo during the twilight of the evening, and he declares his love for her and asks her to marry him. Ah . . . so romantic. I also enjoy classic television. By the way, you would probably never guess this, but I’m a dyed-in-the-wool Trekkie! And as far as music is concerned, music is very important in my life and always has been ever since I was very young. I happen to have a very eclectic taste when it comes to music. I love classical music, old time rock ‘n roll, Christian music, easy listening, pop music, folk, some country, jazz, and blues. It all depends what mood I’m in at the time.

In my spare time, I enjoy quilting, and I love the smell of new fabric. It brings me so much joy to give the quilts I’ve made to those I love. I’m an avid reader of many genres: romance, historical romance, thriller, mystery, science fiction, biography, history, poetry – anything that catches my interest at the moment. I’ll never forget learning to read when I was in the first grade and how the power and magic of the written word mesmerized me. It was as though a whole new world opened its doors to me, and once I stepped into that world, I never wanted to leave it.

As a matter of fact, I’m in the process of writing my autobiography, which is a collection of the stories of my life, and believe me – there are so many! This came as a request from my family. I’m also in the middle of writing a book about my experiences as an operating room nurse, and it reads more like a novel.

My newest adventure is learning how to play the piano. It has been a lifelong dream of mine, and now, finally at the age of 57, I am learning to play. They say it is never to late to learn – and I am having a marvelous time!

I believe that life is what you make it, and I do whatever I can to make my life the very best it can be, no matter what the circumstances are at any given time.

You’ll find that this blog will mostly be about life: what happens, how it happens, and my observations of it. So I hope you’ll follow me on my journey as I travel along this road, and together we can giggle, laugh, rant, rave, gasp, gossip, question, scream, and yes, sometimes even cry.

But one thing’s for sure—we’ll never be bored!
